Boys U/13
Surrey United U/13 Boys kicked off a double header weekend with a solid performance against a tough Vancouver Island Wave team to win by 2-0. United set the tone early and got off to a blistering start scoring in the second minute of play when a great ball was sent down the right for Sinan Zukanovich who calmly chipped the ball over the goalkeeper from twenty five yards. Six minutes later, Surrey added to their lead when Brandon Canuel nodded home a great left wing cross from Manipal Lidher and should have further extended their lead five minutes later when Karn Kular broke free. He tried to slot the ball home but was denied by a great save from Wave’s keeper Jesse Galego. Sammy Kazjerek, Brendan Skinner, Jordan Schnitzer and Sukhi Binning for United were all in outstanding form and provided a solid defensive line which allowed the United midfield and strikers the opportunity to push forward and pressure the Wave team. The game brought no further goals as despite their pressure and territorial advantage Surrey were unable to convert any more chances.

Boys U/13
The second game of the weekend was another tough test for the league leading youngsters against arch rivals Coquitlam Metro-Ford and once again the early part of the first half was all Surrey United who camped in the visitors half for the first fifteen minutes but could not break the deadlock. However, late in the first half United deservedly took the lead when Brandon Canuel rose high to head home a great Evan Chow cross. Karn Kular was once again having an outstanding game in midfield and his clever passes were splitting the opposing defence and found Marcus Cleto and Canuel with breakaway attempts but on both occasions the referee called for offside. Surrey looked equally impressive again in the second half with some fine wing play which has been a prominent feature of their game all season. In the 52nd minute, following a goalmouth scramble, Harman Samra was on hand to blast home from close range to give the United boys and current league leaders the insurance marker and send them on their way to another victory. With another outstanding performance from the Surrey back line United goalkeepers Dawson Smith and Nabeel Jagani had limited work but both did well when called upon and shared a couple of back to back shut-outs over the weekend.

Boys U/14
In the first game of their double header weekend the U14 boys hosted the Vancouver Island Wave on Saturday and were looking to extend their lead at the top of the table. United came out of the gates strong controlling possession of the game and it wasn’t long before they had their first chance on goal which was saved by what would turn out to be their biggest nemesis on Saturday, the Vancouver Island goalkeeper, Max Branyk . Surrey continued to enjoy large spells of possession as the game went on and created several great goal-scoring opportunities with strikers Wyatt Gilbert and Nolan McMurchy both constant threats to the visitors but time after time United were denied goals by the outstanding Branyk. The game ended in a 0-0 tie which represented the first time this season that the U/14 boys had dropped points.

Boys U/14
The U/14 boys were back in action again Sunday morning facing off against Coquitlam Metro Ford in a highly anticipated match between the two top of the table teams. United were looking to make amends for their draw from the previous day and started strongly looking focused on the task in hand. It wasn’t long before their bright start was rewarded when Surrey took the lead through Joel Harrison who finished off an Erick Chmelyk corner that was headed back into the box by Nolan McMurchy. The old adage of “when a goal is scored” came to mind when Coquitlam Metro-Ford tied it up one minute later from a direct free-kick by Matthew McIlwrick. Both teams went into the half deadlocked at 1-1. Coquitlam came out for the second half in a determined manner and netted the go ahead goal in the 47th minute from Quinn Dawson after United failed to clear a bouncing ball in the box. Surrey responded very well and pushed for the equalizer hemming Coquitlam in their half and dominating possession but lacked the finish to match their fine approach play. Then finally with three minutes remaining United defender Erick Chmelyk, who had been pushed forward into the attack, got on the end of a Riley Asserlind cross to fire the ball home from close range to make the score 2-2 and earn United a hard fought draw and a share of the points.

Boys U/15
The Surrey United U15 boys were in for a tough match against Vancouver Island Wave, who was sitting three points back in the standings and boasted the stingiest defensive team in the division. United struggled to string together passes early on but their sound defensive display became the platform for the team to gradually settle into their usual possession game despite the visitor’s efforts to close down space and pressure quickly. Surrey’s calculated build up paid off in the fifteenth minute when Brendan Shaw fed a pass into the path of Luke Warkentin who calmly slotted the ball home with authority to give the home side a 1-0 lead. Surrey continued to keep possession and create chances and was rewarded again in the 25th minute when Will Grayson found some space and scored from close range. Twelve minutes into the second half, Grayson struck again, similar to his first executing the finish after a good team buildup. As the game wore on, Surrey United continued to dominate and the Wave slowly tired as they were hemmed into their end for the final twenty minutes. United was rewarded one more time as Darren Rulofs broke free and a hit a low shot which the keeper could only parry and the ensuing rebound fell kindly for Grayson to clip home from close range to complete his hat-trick and give Surrey a comfortable 4-0 victory.

Boys U/16
Fresh off their first ever BCSPL loss to the Thompson Okanagan team, Surrey United hosted the Vancouver Wave for a home game at Cloverdale Athletic Park on Saturday. United came out determined to make amends for last week’s result and set the tone of the match in the second minute scoring on a Matthew Bains penalty shot which was awarded after was a fantastic flick by Kyle Sohi was hand balled by a Wave defender. Some complacency crept into United’s game and in the 21st minute they were caught napping when a quick turnover at midfield presented Wave striker Bryce Marinus with a breakaway chance which he slotted home despite the valiant attempt by United keeper Lucas Johnson to deny the opponent. Still stinging from the goal United lost their focus and three minutes later the visitors took the lead through Michael Baart who capitalized on another United turnover. Surrey responded before the end of the half with Dilpreet Brar notching the equalizer. The second half saw United continue to control possession over the Wave, however, this time they were more wary and careful of giving up any turnovers. It seemed that despite creating several good chances United were destined to repeat last week’s nemesis by missing, several fantastic opportunities. However, United’s relentless pressure finally paid off in the 69th minute when Obraj Khela broke the deadlock to give the home side the lead. The Island squad played admirably, fighting hard to level the score but a late game substitution paid dividends Gustavo Ortolano came on to give United an injury time insurance marker to give the home team a hard fought 4-2 victory over the Vancouver Island Wave.

Boys U/18
The U18 boys welcomed the Vancouver Island Wave to Cloverdale Athletic Park with the Surrey franchise fastest ever BCSPL goal when Irandeep Kooner latched onto to a fine pass and calmly placed the ball in the back of the net! This ignited the Surrey side and they took the game to the visitors creating one attack after another. They deservedly increased their lead in the 17th minute, again on a nice finish from Kooner. With the game seemingly in hand Surrey let down their guard and the visitors took full advantage and pulled a goal back in the 27th minute when following a spectacular save by keeper Andrew Hicks, the United defence stood and watched, allowing Giordano De Paolis to nip in and score on the rebound. In the second half, United striker Benjamin Edu restored Surrey’s two goal advantage at the 61st minute mark but seven minutes later a defensive breakdown allowed the visitor’s Sam Gillman to reduce the deficit. However, despite a stirring effort from the visitors Surrey hung on to record the narrow but nonetheless important 3-2 victory.

Girls U/13
The Surrey United girls who are battling hard to remain in contention for the division lead had to settle for a tie against a very hard working Vancouver Island Wave team at Cloverdale Athletic Park on Sunday. Surrey opened the scoring in the game on a penalty shot from Isabel Bratvold after a Wave outfield player intentionally saved the ball with her hands to prevent it from going directly in the goal with her hands. Inexplicably, the referee did not issue the mandatory red card which ultimately impacted the outcome of the game. Surrey continued to dominate play and played some very good soccer throughout but were unable to increase their lead. The Wave managed to tie the game off of a free kick that was knocked deep into the area and deflected into the goal. With the game knotted at the half the visitors took the lead early on in the second after a free kick from 25 yards out eluded the grasps of United goal-keeper Bayley Wachsmuth and ended up in the net. United responded well and poured on the pressure and were rewarded with a goal by Zoe Garedakis who hammered home a low shot following a well played pre-rehearsed short corner routine featuring Mackenzie Toop. The game was called with less than a minute remaining due to a serious injury to United defender Kassie Kirlik who required medical assistance.

Girls U/14
Surrey United U/14 Girls defeated Vancouver Island 2-0 in BCSPL action at Cloverdale Athletic park on Sunday. Surrey faced a very physical team that was quick to close down the home side which required some very hard work from the United players to move the ball quickly in order to find the space to play. The players accomplished this and scored an excellent goal midway through first half when Alyssa Hunt headed home an excellent cross from Tina Grsic. Surrey United was able to play with more freedom and generated more chances but some sloppy finishing kept the score to 1-0 at half. The second half started with even more pressure from Vancouver Island but the ever impressive Kylee Walker in the United midfield produced some excellent opportunities for her team mates which they squandered. However, a great combination play between Walker and Montana Leonard, saw Leonard skillfully turn with the ball and beat two defenders before chipping the visiting goalkeeper to notch the insurance marker and give United a fully deserved 2-0 victory.

Girls U/15
The U/15 Girls took on the visiting Vancouver Island Wave at Cloverdale Athletic Park on Sunday and followed up the previous week’s convincing win with another fine performance and registered a 4-0 victory. United opened the scoring early in the game when Jenna Baxter scored with one of her trademark free-kicks in the fourth minute of play. Six minutes later Monica Heer, last week’s hat-trick hero, continued her goal scoring streak by notching United’s second of the day with a clinical finish. By the time, the 22nd minute rolled around Connie Awahu-Darkoh had added a third for the home team which pretty much iced the victory foe United. Surrey cruised through the second half and Baxter added a second goal midway through the frame to round out the scoring.

Michelle Knowlan came into the game at the beginning of the second half and quickly scored to put the home team up . Julia Lauzon scored a well placed left footer later in the half to round out the scoring.

This week’s Surrey United BCSPL Player of the Week goes to Boys U/15 player Will Grayson who scored a hat-trick to help his team to a comfortable 4-0 victory over Vancouver Island Wave at Cloverdale Athletic Park on Saturday.

Boys U/13
The U13 boys faced a tough challenge this weekend in the Kelowna against the hard working hosts. Surrey came out strong right from the kick-off and attacked down the flanks with some great play from Manipal Lidher and Sinan Zukanovich. United were rewarded early on for their initiative and it was a great cross from Lidher that produced a scramble in the Okanagan penalty area allowing Marcus Cleto to slam home to give United a 1-0 lead after only three minutes of play. Another great cross from Lidher a minute later found Zukanovich who hit a spectacular first time volley but lifted it over the cross-bar. Okanagan rallied and after two further minutes capitalized on a defensive blunder and equalized with a great strike from Mitch Morgan which United goalkeeper Dawson Smith almost saved. Surrey continued to press and skipper Brendan Skinner led by example scoring with a fine low shot from 18 yards to restore the lead for United. Two minutes before half-time Karn Kular made it 3-1 with a great free-kick from 25 yards which dipped over the wall and left the keeper with no chance. The second half was very entertaining with both teams exchanging attacks and Brandon Canuel thought he had made it 4-1 for but the goal was called back for offside. Surrey looked very dangerous throughout the game and was full value for the win.

Boys U/14
The first placed Surrey United U/14 Boys took to the road to take on Thompson Okanagan boys in Mission Sports fields in Kelowna. Surrey started the game slowly as the home team seemed to come out with a bit more energy and their hard work denied United any real chances. However, Surrey finally got the breakthrough in the 25th minute when a Erick Chmelyk corner-kick was converted at the far post by Riley Asserlind. Surrey took that lead into the second half and came out with a lot more determination and energy taking the game to the home team. At the 40th minute, another corner kick from Erick Chmelyk to the far post was met by an powerful header from Nolan McMurchy that he directed back across the face of the goal and into the top corner of the net. United took control of the game with long periods of possession, but were not rewarded with any further goals despite several good scoring chances and a nice shot by Felipe Viera that rattled off the post. In the end, Surrey had to settle for a 2-0 win that kept them at the top of the table for another week.

Boys U/15
From the outset the United U 15 Boys played some fine possession football moving the ball around purposely. Their fine start was rewarded in the 10th minute when Brendan Shaw delivered a tremendous free kick from 25 yards out which he lifted over the wall and past the outstretched reach of the keeper into the top corner of the net. Two minutes later Bradley Heffey slotted a fine pass into the path of Marcus Thavonesouk which he calmly dispatched into the corner of the net to provide a quick 2-0 lead for the away side. Okanagan settled down after this and play for the rest of the half was a much more even affair where both defences dominated the forwards resulting in neither side generating anything in the way of quality scoring chances. United centre back Eric DeGraaf was in fine form, intercepting several attacking passes and making some probing runs with the ball deep into Okanagan territory which caused some uncomfortable moments for the home team. In the second half, United came out with fresh determination to put the game away, but most of the shots they launched at the Okanagan net in the first 15 minutes but were either off target or produced some routine saves by the goalkeeper. Okanagan continued to push for a goal that would get them back into the game and enjoyed a fine spell of play midway through the second half. They nearly snatched a goal in the 60th minute but United defender Jake Reid was able to rescue the situation and clear the ball off the goal line. Surrey United goalkeeper Aman Thind also thwarted the home team with two fine saves. United responded well and was stopped by some spectacular saves from the Okanagan keeper. In the 78th minute, United iced the game when Luke Warkentin headed in a corner kick to complete the scoring and register a deserved 3-0 victory.

Boys U/16
The Surrey United U16 boys with only 14 players on their roster were confident that they could manage and win. However, they suffered an early set-back in the 9th minute when a defensive miscue led to an Okanagan breakaway. Lucas Johnson came out to challenge the striker but was unable to deny the goal. Surrey United responded well and managed to control the tempo and maintain possession for much of the first half, but was surprised by several quick and determined counter attacks from Thompson Okanagan. Surrey had several chances to score throughout the half but squandered them all and found themselves a goal down at the interval. United began the second half with more urgency but the pattern of the game did not change as United created several outstanding scoring chances but almost without exception the shots were either wide or high of the net. United pushed extra players forward in search of goals but they would not come and Surrey suffered their first loss in the BCSPL, much to the delight of the exuberant Thompson Okanagan fans.

Girls U/13
On a sunny Sunday afternoon in Kelowna the U13 girls took on Thompson Okanagan looking to keep pace with the top of the table contenders. The game began with both teams looking to impose themselves on the game and each team created a couple of noteworthy chances at either end of the park. Surrey United had a tough time unlocking the Okanagan high defensive line and was frustratingly caught off side far too often. The tactic and the physically much taller home team continued to make life difficult for United and both teams went into halftime deadlocked at 0-0. With some good tactical discussion and realignment at half time United came out determined to make their trip worthwhile. Then finally in the 48th minute Mackenzie Toop opened the scoring for United much too the relief of the team and the large contingency of travelling parents and supporters. It was like a cloud had been lifted from the team for only two minutes later Isabel Bratvold broke through the home team defence and calmly slotted the ball into the bottom corner of the net. United poured forward in search of more goals and a renewed confidence but although they came close on a couple of occasions there were no further goals which enabled United to register a 2-0 victory. Brittany Costa had another outstanding game in midfield and Kassie Kirlik was assured and commanding in defence.

Girls U/15
The Surrey United U/15 Girls took on Thompson Okanagan this weekend in Kelowna and right from the get go Surrey pressured the Okanagan defence generating many scoring opportunities which they wasted with some wayward finishing. However, in the 29th minute of play Monpreet Heer found the back of the net hammering home a rebound after the Okanagan goalkeeper found Harman Billen’s powerful shot too hard to handle. Five minutes later Heer struck again striking home a Jenna Baxter pass off an indirect kick. Heer then completed her hat-trick in the 36th minute when she raced onto a a beautiful breakaway pass up the middle from Gurneet Dhaliwal. With the outcome of the game pretty much determined United cruised through the second half and were in full control but were unable to add any further goals. Then late in the second half the home side notched a consolation goal to spoil United goalkeeper Savannah Williams’ shut-out bid.

Surrey United U-15′s missed a great opportunity to grab a share of first place when they tied fifth placed Coquitlam Metro-Ford in their make-up game at Cloverdale Athletic Park on Saturday. It was a lack luster performance from the highly rated United team and despite a fine performance from Captain Cole Basarich in the midfield United were limited to a couple of good scoring chances in the first half which they squandered. In fact, it was the visitors who took the lead shortly before the interval when Jacob Powell, the division’s leading goal-scorer, took advantage of some sloppy defensive work to score from close range. In the second half it was the impressive Basarich who knotted the scores when he headed home a Brendan Shaw free-kick to the far post. When Kerman Pannu then gave Surrey the lead in the 66th minute it seemed assured that United were on their way to securing the three points. However, three minutes later Coquitlam Metro-Ford’s Jacob Georgas scored directly from a vicious swerving corner-kick to earn the visitors a share of the points.

Boys U/16
In this top of the table clash between Surrey United and Coquitlam Metro-Ford both teams had one hundred per cent win records entering the game and both teams ended the game with their unbeaten streaks in place as they fought to a 1-1 draw at Cloverdale Athletic Park on Saturday. It was an evenly contested game and United struck the first blow opening the scoring in the 21st minute when Kyle Sohi followed up on his own rebound to force the ball home form close range. Goal scoring chances were at a premium throughout the game as the defences on both teams were dominating the forwards. Coquitlam Metro-Ford leveled the scores with eight minutes of the game remaining when Elijah Sampson headed home the equalizer.

Boys U/18
The Surrey United U18 boys played Coquitlam Metro Ford at Cloverdale Athletic Park on Saturday afternoon and came up against a strong opponent who dominated the game to register a 4-0 victory over Surrey United. The United team still coping with some significant injuries struggled from the outset to maintain possession of the ball and Coquitlam Metro Ford came storming forward to dominate the play. Tyler Mertens opened the scoring for Coquitlam Metro-Ford in the 16th minute but the game was put out of Surrey United’s reach in the final five minutes of the first half when Lucas Reiz scored a pair of goals for the visitors. Surrey United attempted to regroup in the second and provided a better effort but there was no way back into the game and Coquitlam Metro-Ford rounded out the scoring in the 86th minute of the game on a goal by Andre Clerc.

After a long break from BCSPL action, the Surrey United U-14 Girls faced a very tough opponent from South Fraser at Cloverdale Athletic Park on Sunday. The game started at a frantic pace for the Selects as South Fraser played a heavy
pressure, double teaming style that made it difficult for the Selects to establish their usual rhythm. Eventually, the Surrey United players were able to find some solutions and apply some pressure on the visitors led by the dangerous runs of Alyssa Hunt. At the 14th minute United took the lead when Emily Pearson unsettled the South Fraser defender with her physical presence allowing team mate Montana Leonard to pounce on the loose ball and slam it home from close range. There was plenty of end to end play in an exciting game but neither side was able to add any further goals in the half. South Fraser with a strong wind at their backs started to dominate the midfield and although South Fraser enjoyed plenty of possession they were not able to create any scoring opportunities due to some excellent performances from the United defenders including U/13 call up goalkeeper Abigail Hunt and the very impressive Kristen Sakaki. Finally, with about 12 minutes left in the game, South Fraser capitalized following a corner kick. After a poor clearance allowed a second cross it was met by a great header from South Fraser’s Kristen Fairburn that powered into the net. Surrey responded well and came close on a couple of occasions but were unable to get the vital touch and notch a winning goal.

It was a great spring day for soccer as two South District rivals Surrey United and South Fraser met at Cloverdale Athletic Park. Both teams came out with good energy and right from the start it was a fiercely competitive game with both teams enjoying some good build up play but neither side able to create any clear cut scoring opportunities. South Fraser opened the scoring half way through the first half from a free-kick that was only partially cleared to the top of the penalty area where Hanna Carrothers drilled a low shot past United goalkeeper Alanna Carmichael. The second half started much like the first every challenge being fiercely contested by both teams. Fifteen minutes into the second frame Surrey United grabbed the equalizer when a great through ball down the sideline from Rachel Peckinpaugh found Chelsea Harkins who made a nice inside move to beat the defender and tucked the ball short side to make it 1-1. South Fraser continued some strong play but Carmichael made some great saves to keep the game at 1-1. In the 70th minute, however the assistant referee awarded an out of the box hand ball against Carmichael gave South Fraser a free kick. South Fraser’s Emma Partridge fired a low shot into the bottom corner of the net. With little time remaining United showed great determination and pressed hard. Surrey pushed extra players forward in search of goals and enjoyed some excellent pressure for the last eight minutes of the game but could not find the equalizer. Another fine performance and great effort from the luckless United team who just cannot seem to catch a break and ended up for the second successive game on the wrong end of a one goal game.

Boys U/13
The Surrey United U/13 boys extended their unbeaten streak with a 1-0 victory at Cloverdale Athletic Park on Saturday against a very well organized South Fraser team to maintain their first place in the standings. Surrey was a constant threat going down the flanks using the great runs from both fullbacks, Sukhjot Bining and Brendan Skinner to great effect. Karn Kular went close after a brilliant run left four players trailing in his wake before unleashing a powerful strike which just went wide. However, Kular was rewarded ten minutes later when he pounced on a through ball from Ramirez to calmly slot home from 12 yards which turned to be the winning goal. South Fraser came close to tying up the game six minutes later but were denied a goal by a great finger tip save from United goalkeeper NabeelJagani who went on to register a shut-out. In the second half, United pressed forward relentlessly in search of further goals but South Fraser goalkeeper Liam Koller came up with two great saves to firstly deny Kevin Ramirez and then Kular who was played in by Harman Samra. A special mention for the United’s wingers, Sinan Zukanovich, Manipal Lidher, Parm Badohal, and Samra whose unselfish work-rate has been a key factor in the teams excellent run.

Boys U/14
Surrey United beat South Fraser 1-0 in a top of the table clash at Cloverdale Athletic Park on Saturday and the victory enabled United to increase their lead at the top of the standings. The game was a tight hard fought scrappy affair and certainly the visitors edged the play in the first half. However, following some key substitutions, United looked a different side in the second half and started to create more scoring chances as they enjoyed a larger share of possession but were unable to convert that territorial advantage into goals. Felipe Vieira came close in the 55th minute and after a tricky run which took him past three defenders he was brought down at the edge of the penalty area but his excellent free-kick just scraped over the cross-bar. Then finally, United got the break-through they were seeking in the 66th minute when a brilliantly flighted free-kick by Eric Chmelyk was met by substitute Riley Asserlind who fired home from close range. South Fraser battled hard for the equalizer but the resilient United defence held firm to deny the visitors. United goalkeepers Matthew McLeod and Jas Thoor both played well in combining for the shut-out.

Boys U/15
The Surrey United U-15′s finally discovered their goal-scoring touch to add to their fine play this season with three goals in each half to beat South Fraser 6-0 at Cloverdale Athletic Park on Saturday and maintain their top of the table status. United opened the scoring to set the tone when Jake Reid hammered home a powerful strike following a superbly taken free-kick. Twenty minutes later Reid added his and United’s second from another almost identical set-play. Right on the stroke of half-time Surrey’s Will Grayson flicked home a corner-kick from close range to give the home side a 3-0 lead at the interval. In the second half it was all one way traffic as United poured forward in search of further goals which came in the 63rd minute from Kerman Pannu and in the 67th minute from Brad Heffey. South Fraser then had a player red carded and also conceded an own goal to complete the scoring and end what was a miserable day for them.

Boys U/18
Surrey United U18 Boys played South Fraser at Cloverdale Athletic Park and exploded to score five second half goals to win 6-1 and secure their first victory of the season. United got off to a great start when after only two minutes of play Irandeep Kooner scored from the penalty spot after he was brought down. Surrey squandered several more great scoring chances and were made to regret their wayward finishing when South Fraser’s Arvin Nikseresht tied things up four minutes from the break. However, United responded well and three minutes after the re-start regained the lead when Dalton San headed home from close range. Three minutes later Harpreet Samra increased Surrey’s lead with another header and then a further two minutes later Nick Prasad added yet another headed goal. The ever dangerous substitute call-up Connor Prentice added two further goals in the final twelve minutes to round out the scoring.

Girls U/13
Surrey United and South Fraser played to a 0-0 draw at Cloverdale Athletic Park on Sunday and the first observation is that the lack of scoring did not reflect the true story of the game which was a superbly entertaining affair and clearly demonstrated what the BCSPL is all about. The game was played at a frenetic pace, full of back and forth play and where the quality of skill and passing was outstanding creating many exciting moments throughout the game for the many spectators in attendance. In the second minute of play Surrey might have taken the lead but were denied by the alertness of South Fraser goalkeeper Alexis Liebendeizer. South Fraser enjoyed the benefit of a strong wind during their first half and had a greater share of possession but Surrey’s defensive core led by Kassie Kirlik and midfielder Brittany Costa provided excellent coverage for their own goalkeeper Abigail Hunt who figured in the play but was rarely tested such was the quality of the defensive coverage. In the second half aided by the wind United poured forward in search of a goal but South Fraser also defended resolutely with Liebendeizer making two more fine saves to earn the shut-out and also earn her team a share of the points.

Girls U/15
On Sunday the U15 girls produced a come from behind win against South Fraser with two goals in the last fifteen minutes to register a 2-1 victory. South Fraser got off to a bright start and took the lead in the 8th minute when Jenaya Robertson picked up a loose ball on the right edge of the penalty area and fired a low right foot shot into the far corner of the net. The goal rocked United and they struggled to find their usual flowing rhythm. However, they look more assured at the start of the second half and gradually started to take control of the game. In the 63rd minute of the game Surrey equalized when Tanis Cuthbert ran onto a perfect left wing cutback cross and hammered the ball into the bottom corner of the net from fifteen yards. Spurred on by the goal United surged forward and three minutes scored again. It was a clever play by Monpreet Heer stepping over a right wing cross to leave it for Liv Jillings to steer the ball home into the corner of the net. Surrey played out the remaining 10 minutes with some smart play retaining possession and denying the visitors any chances to tie up the game.

Girls U/16
On Saturday the U16 girls team came out on the wrong side of the result in a thrilling game which saw Coquitlam Metro-Ford Fusion score a stoppage time goal to secure a 4-3 victory at Cloverdale Athletic Park. The game started well for the United girls who opened the scoring at the 17th minute mark on a penalty shot by Chelsea Harkins and then ten minutes later Natalia Kaczmarek added a second for the home team blasting home Harkins’ perfectly floated free-kick at the far post. Coquitlam Metro-Ford responded well and notched two goals in fairly quick order from Tannaysia Coady and Stefania Custeau. However, Surrey restored in their lead in first half stoppage time when Kaczmarek added her second again after some fine work down the left by Harkins. Eleven minutes into the second half Coquitlam Metro-Ford grabbed an equalizer from Monica Levarsky. Both teams went in search of the winner as the play switched from end to end and United thought with five minutes remaining they had the winner but watched in vain as Jenna Baxter’s shot just drifted narrowly wide of the target. It was not going to be United’s day and that became evident in stoppage time when Levarsky was on hand to score her second goal of the game to leave the Surrey girls empty handed and frustrated.

It was not going to be United’s day and that became evident in stoppage time when Levarsky was on hand to score her second goal of the game to leave the Surrey girls empty handed and frustrated.

This week’s Surrey United BCSPL Player of the Week goes to Girls U/16 player BCSPL player Natalia Kacmarek who had a very impressive overall game and notched two goals unfortunately in a losing cause.

Boys U/13
The U13 boys had another fine game beating Thompson Okanagan 2-0 at Cloverdale Athletic Park on Saturday 24th March in what proved to be a very tough test. Surrey was pushed all the way with some very determined play from the visitors but United had most of the play in the first half and their best chance came to Brandon Canuel who made a good run to pounce onto a through ball but fired just over the bar over from 18 yards. Some good runs from Brendan Skinner on the right flank caused Okanagan problem but Surrey could not convert on any of the stream of crosses he provided. The second half continued in the same manner with United forcing Okanagan deep into their half and the Surrey pressure finally paid off when a clearance fell to the feet of Karan Saroa who unleashed a tremendous strike into the bottom left hand corner. Okanagan pushed hard for an equalizer but could not break down the excellent United backline led by Jordan Schnitzer. With just a few minutes remaining Surrey grabbed the insurance marker when Marcus Cleto scored from 20 yards with a great left foot strike.

Boys U/14
After a 2-week hiatus, Surrey United hosted Thompson Okanogan at Cloverdale Athletic Park on Saturday 24th March and right from the opening kick-off Surrey took control of the game and spent most of the first half in the opponents half. However they were unable to convert their large spells of possession until the 20th minute when Felipe Vieira cut in from the right side and dribbled into the box where he was fouled but the ball fell to the feet of Noah Owen who made no mistake in slotting it home to make it 1-0. With Surrey dominating play they were almost caught on a quick counter-attack and only a great save by goalkeeper Jas Thoor enabled them to head into the second half with a 1-0 lead. The second half continued in the same vein with Surrey United enjoying large spells of possession. However, it wasn’t long before they found the insurance marker, when second half substitute goalkeeper Matthew McLeod picked off a wayward cross and quickly distributed to Nolan McMurchy who flew down the wing and crossed for Felipe Vieira to finish and make it 2-0. McMurchy then made it 3-0 heading home an Erick Chmelyk corner before Joel Harrison rounded out the scoring slotting home another Chmelyk corner at the far post to register the 4-0 victory.

Boys U/15
The Surrey United U-15′s performed well against Thompson Okanagan FC creating numerous chances but were thwarted by some excellent goalkeeping from Thompson Okanagan’s OFC. Going into halftime both teams were level 0-0. After the break United continued to press forward but just could not solve the puzzle and in counter attacking TOFC nearly opened the scoring on a clear breakaway; The playing surface struck again, bobbling a the ball and causing a painfully errant shot. Surrey finally tallied midway through the second half when Kerman Pannu stripped the opposition centre-back and promptly placed a shot top corner for the 1-0 lead. Shortly after, Pannu again created a turnover for Nestor Valencia to slot home for a 2-0 lead and final score.

Boys U/16
The league leading Surrey United U16 Boys worked hard to battle for possession in their game against the visiting Thompson Okanagan team and there were few chances for either side in the first half where both keepers were rarely called into action able to preserve their sheets clean in the first half. Surrey United did an excellent job of maintaining possession and gradually wore down the Okanagan team down. It was not long after the interval that United found their first marker in the 43nd minute when Vaggeli Boucas scored on a great shot after a nice set-up by Amrit Jagdeo. Two minutes later with Thompson Okanagan still stinging from the first a nice combination play between Kyle Sohi and Jagdeo found Karn Phagura who quickly buried the ball in the opponents net. In the 56th minute with Surrey United pressing relentlessly a superb cross by Connor Hildebrandt was flicked past the keeper by Joel Waterman. The fourth and final goal came in the 79th minute when Josh Tylor netted after a nice set up pass from Bhavi Dhaliwal.

Boys U/18
Surrey United U18 Boys played Thompson Okanagan FC at Newton Athletic Park on Friday afternoon as part of the Whitecap’s Showcase and United deservedly opened the scoring at the 17 minute mark with a nice finish from Dalton San. Surrey had numerous other scoring opportunities in the half and either squandered the chances or were denied by some fine saves from the Okanagan goalkeeper. Surrey continued to dominate the play in the second half but a turnover late in the half resulted in a goal for the Okanagan by Mackenzie Rigg. Then to rub further salt into the wound Okanagan’s Matt McHugh notched another goal in stoppage time to grab all the points which was disappointing for the hard-working Surrey side who deserved to take something from the game.

Girls U/13
The Surrey United Girls came out with purpose on Sunday March 18th for their game against Thompson Okanagan and responded well after their loss the previous week to bounce back with an impressive 7-1 victory. Mackenzie Toop led the way by scoring a pair of goals in the 14th and 18th minutes of the game to set United on their way. Zoe Garedakis and Kacee Ougden also netted first half markers to give United a 4-0 advantage at the interval. opened the scoring early and set the tone for the rest of the half which saw the United girls on top 4-nil.The second half was much of the same with United continuing ther dominance and Isabella Roque and then a pair of goals from Isabel Bratvold completed the scoring for United with Okanagan’s Mackenzie Barton notching a consolation for the visitors a Surrey turnover. All in all, the afternoon saw the United team play some very good soccer and if not for fine play of the Okanagan goalkeeper Alyson Taylor the margin of victory would have been even bigger for United.

The Surrey United U18 boys faced off against the Coquitlam Metro Ford U17 team for a late afternoon match at Town Centre Coquitlam still searching their first win of the season. Surrey United put forth a much improved effort over previous games and Jeevraaj Rai had a strong game in the midfield. with his physical play. Zach Mohammed started the game at right outside back, a first at this position for him. However, United found themselves a goal down after 11 minutes when Coquitlam Metro Ford capitalized on some sloppy defensive play and their striker Razvan Gheorghe pounced on the opportunity to score and slotted home from twelve yards. Surrey responded well and battled back but two minutes before the interval received a crucial set-back when Ghorghe netted another goal with shot from outside the 18 yard box that found its mark past the Surrey United keeper. In the second half, Surrey United came out in a determined mood and within two minutes reduced the deficit scoring on a rocket of a shot by Jeevaaj Rai. Surrey now full of confidence poured forward to dominate play and went in search of the equalizer with Harpreet Samra and Dalton San both prominent carving out several scoring opportunities which United just could not turn into goals. Coquitlam Metro-Ford who defended for virtually the entire half hung to secure the 2 -1 victory.

Girls U/13
Surrey United U/13 Girls suffered their first taste of defeat this season on Sunday losing 2-0 to Coquitlam Metro-Ford in a very even game. United conceded an early goal in the10th minute when a right wing cross unluckily deflected off a United defender and into the net. The game see-sawed back and forth as both teams exchanged chances in a very well played match but after 55 minutes Coquitlam Metro-Ford added an insurance marker when Adrianna Babinski converted from close range following another Metro-Ford set piece. United midfielder Brittany Costa had a fine game but despite her efforts United were unable to break down a very well organized Coquitlam Metro-Ford team.

Girls U/14
Surrey United U 14 girls battled hard against a strong Coquitlam Metro-Ford team but ended up losing 1-0 in a close fought game that really good have gone either way. The all important goal for Coquitlam Metro-Ford was scored by Mieke Stobbart in the 53rd minute of the game.

Girls U/15
SU U15 girls, missing six regulars from their line-up called up four of the U14’s to fill out the roster and came up on the wrong end of a seven goal thriller. Surrey got off to a shaky start and after 16 minutes found themselves two goals down on scores by Andrea Perotta and Hope Dueck. Surrey battled hard and five minutes later reduced the deficit with a goal from Taylor Weller on a nice header. However, Coquitlam Metro-Ford restored their two goal advantage just before the interval on Dueck’s second goal of the game. Fifteen minutes into the second half Brooklyn Doucettte further increased Coquitlam Metro-Ford’s lead making in 4-1. One could be forgiven for thinking that the game was not out of reach but Surrey staged a remarkable comeback and pulled a goal back through Monpreet Heer in the 60th minute and got another tally from Tanis Cuthbert eight minutes later to set the stage for a rousing finale. United threw everything at Coquitlam Metro-Ford and piled on the pressure, winning a succession of corners but unfortunately they could not find the finishing touch to tie up the game and Coquitlam Metro-Ford held on grimly to secure the victory and the three points.

Girls U/16
Surrey United got off to a great start against Coquitlam Metro-Ford with a great strike from Chelsea Harkins in the 4th minute off of a 30 yard free kick. Coquitlam Metro-Ford responded well and pushed forward in search of an equalizer but was thwarted by some good defensive work by United in the first half. With the score 1-0 at the half Surrey United had a great opportunity to increase their lead at the beginning of the second half following some fine build up through the middle of the park they squandered the scoring opportunity. This proved to be a bit of a turning point as six minutes later Coquitlam Metro-Ford scored the tying goal when Nicole Foreman headed home from a corner-kick. The goal gave Coquitlam Metro-Ford the momentum and they took the game to Surrey United. With Surrey seemingly heading for a draw they suffered a set-back when Coquitlam Metro-Ford’s Monica Levarsky popped up to notch what proved to be the game winner with five minutes of the game remaining. United pushed forward looking for the tying goal but surrendered another goal in stoppage time when Foreman added her second tally of the game to secure the victory although the 3-1 score-line did not reflect the closeness of the game.

Girls U/18
The Surrey United U18 girls travelled to Coquitlam Town Center on Sunday to take on the Coquitlam Metro Ford girls on a blustery day but ended up losing 2-0 to a pair of goals from Metro-Ford’s Isabella Di Trocchio. The two teams battled hard without either side generating much in the way of quality chances from open play. In the second half the Surrey girls were pressing and had a lot of possession especially down the right flank where Michelle Knowlan was a constant threat with her persistent runs down the wing. Unfortunately the team was unable to capitalize on the many crosses and corner kicks that she created. With about five minutes left to play in the game Surrey United had yet another corner kick but unfortunately it turned out to be to their detriment as the corner was cleared and Coquitlam Metro Ford girls scored from the play on a quick counter attack. Surrey United girls pushed forward to get the equalizer leaving themselves short-handed in defence and Coquitlam Metro Ford scored again in injury time to seal a 2-0 win.

This week’s Surrey United BCSPL Player of the Week goes to Boys U/18 team player Jeevraj Rai who scored a goal and had an outstanding individual game despite his team’s 2-1 loss.

Weekly Round-Up March 3rd & 4th

Surrey United Weekly Round-Up

By Marion F Dent Press Correspondent
March 3rd & 4th

Boys U/13
The U13 boys played their first home game of the season and an excellent 3-1 win over a very good Mountain FC team. United got off to an amazing start and within the first five minutes scored two goals. The first goal came from some some brilliant speed and skill from Karn Kular on the right wing and his cross was met by Kevin Ramirez who cracked the ball home on the volley. Two minutes later Kular then showed his predatory scoring skills pouncing on a loose ball in the penalty area and then slamming it into the back of the net. With some outstanding midfield play United were attacking at will on the flanks and showed have ended the half 3 or 4 up but did not convert any more of the several chances they created. Mountain rallied in the second half and pegged Surrey in their half for the first ten minutes but some commanding defence by Manipal Lidher, Jordan Schnitzer and the outstanding Sukhjot Binning denied the visitors any clear cut chances. Surrey responded well and in the 58th minute increased their lead when Evan Chow capitalized after a defensive blunder to make it 3-0. Mountain continued to play good soccer and did get a consolation goal from Marco Favaro on a penalty shot seven minutes before the final whistle but it was a case of too little too late for the visitors.

Boys U/14
The second weekend in the BCSPL Kicked off with Surrey United’s home opener against a Mountain who was looking for their first win after playing to a 1-1 draw the previous weekend. The game began with both teams battling for possession in the opening third of the game. Surrey united slowly started to take control as the game went on and opened the scoring in the 28th minute when Joel Harrison headed towards goal and the defender on the line failed to clear and only succeeded in deflecting it into their net. The second half began with several changes for United who had come flying out of the gates at the re-start to create two chances that they should have converted. However, they didn’t have to wait long for the second goal when in the 38th minute a Nolan McMurchy cross struck the crossbar and fell down for Noah Owen to out-muscle a defender and force the ball into the net. Surrey looked like they had the game wrapped up at this point but in the 53rd minute Mountain pulled one back from Devon Jones making it 2-1. The remaining 22 minutes produce some exciting soccer and tense moments but Surrey was able to hold on and maintain their strong start to the season.

Boys U/15
The Surrey United U-15 Boys finally showed some scoring prowess putting Mountain down 3-0 inside twenty minutes. The first came at the eight minute mark when Brad Heffey flicked a good ball into the path of a well timed run by Brendan Shaw who calmly finished. At the fifteen minute mark, it was Shaw’s turn to become the provider and he slipped a pass into the path of Heffey who struck a powerful shot into the net to double the lead. Six minutes later Will Grayson set up Shaw for a tap-in and his second of the match. Surrey disappointed in the second half as they struggled to maintain their champagne soccer of the first half and Mountain pulled one goal back fourteen minutes into the second frame through Christian Nichele. Mountain created a number of subsequent scoring chances which for Surrey were thankfully turned away by keeper Chris Lauzon whose fine performance enabled United to hang on for a 3-1 victory.

Boys U/16
The Surrey United U16 Boys started the game slowly and it was apparent right from the opening whistle that Mountain was going to give Surrey United a hard physical game as these two teams met again after producing a fantastic match in the mini season. Surrey opened the scoring in the 13th minute when a great right wing cross by Kyle Sohi was met by a powerful header at the far post from Manveer Dhillon. Mountain FC battled back strongly and leveled the scores in the 29th minute through Michael Mauro. In the second half United’s play was too casual resulting in a large number of turnovers forcing United keeper Robert Goodey to come up with some big saves. Mountain eventually got the go-ahead marker in the 72nd minute through Vincenzo Caporale and for the first time in BCSPL play the U16’s were staring down a loss. However, their never say die attitude came shining through and in the final minute of regulation Dilpreet Brar hammered a shot that the Mountain keeper failed to hold onto and the ever impressive Connor Hildebrant was on hand to slam home the rebound. However, there was more drama to unfold and in injury time the lone keeper for Mountain received an unfortunate leg injury and had to exit the game. Mountain had to put their center back in as the keeper and then in the 3+ minute of stoppage time Dilpreet Brar slammed home the winner to give the home team a very exciting 3-2 victory.

Boys U/18
The U18 boys regrouped today for their game against Mountain United FC. Reinforcements were called up from the U18 Metro side and Sean MacKay, Connor Prentice and Matt Pierre contributed to the effort. Harpreet Samra scored for United at the 8 min mark of the first half for Surrey United but Mountain answered shortly after when David Drosinis scored following a corner-kick to see the teams in knotted at the half-time and the teams were tied at the half. Surrey came on strong in the second holding the majority of the play and were rewarded with a magnificent goal scored off a header by Juhnyung Lee following a great cross by Harpreet Samra. Unfortunately, Surrey was unable to hang on to the lead and Mountain tied it up on a goal by Diego Grossling midway through the half making the final score 2-2.

Girls U/13
The first half was a lively affair with both teams exchanging attacks and threatening to score. Surrey United’s Mackenzie Toop had some fine runs down the right flank and Mountain countered with some good runs down their right flank. The game was well contested by both teams but neither side was able to establish any advantage..The second half saw the Surrey United team step up their pressure and some great individual battles by Brittany Costa, Kassie Kirlik and Neeraj Braich were all contributing factors in a momentum shift which saw Surrey really take over. Kassie Kirlik followed up last week’s strong performance with another outstanding performance at the back and came close to opening the scoring but her powerful shot struck the post and rebounded to safety. In the 60th minute of play, United finally broke the deadlock when Isabel Bratvold received a superb cross-field pass from Neeraj Braich and then outpaced the defence to slam home what proved to be the winner. However, Bratvold wasn’t finished and four minutes later she went on a streaking breakaway from the half line and scored her second of the day to secure the victory. It was another strong performance by the United team where defender, Kailin Richardson, had an outstanding game in defence.

Girls U/14
Surrey United Selects 98 defeated Mountain United F.C. 2-0 in an early morning U-14 girl’s BCSPL game Sunday. The game was a bit of a see-saw affair that required physical battles to be won before a skill game could be established. The game remained scoreless at half. Surrey started to dominate the play in the latter stages of the first half and continued that dominance in the second half. After 45 minutes of play United’s Alyssa Hunt was taken down in the penalty box after a clever feint deceived the Mountain defender. She dusted herself off and took the spot-kick herself calmly slotting the ball into the bottom left corner of the net. Ten minutes later, United grabbed an insurance marker when Emily Pearson pounced on a loose ball off a free kick and slammed the ball into the net from close range to make it 2-0.The team combined a good balance of physical play with skilled play and were fully deserving of the victory.

Girls U/15
Plagued with injuries and sickness the SUS U15 girls faired relatively well in the battle with Mountain who are United’s main rival. The game started off at a very fast pace and play was back and forth with not many clear cut goal-scoring chances. However, in the 17th minute Mountain took a stranglehold on the game when they opened the scoring through Rachel Jones. Surrey came out in the second half with a greater sense of purpose and showing a great deal of grit and determination. Unfortunately, they couldn’t find the back of the net as they poured forward in search of the equalizer. This left them a little bit vulnerable to the counter-attack but goalkeeper, Savannah Williams, made some key saves to keep the game close.

Girls U/16
The Surrey United U16 girls had a tough weekend losing a pair of games in their double header schedule. On Saturday they lost 3-1 to South Fraser in a game they easily could have won. They went 2-0 down in the first half on South Fraser goals by Danae Derksen and Allie Connor but the Surrey rallied strongly in the second frame. A goal by Megan Leite in the 53rd minute reduced the deficit and then United had to great chance to equalize after being awarded a penalty but unfortunately the shot hammered off the cross-bar and was scrambled clear. With United pushing hard for the tying goal South Fraser added an injury time goal from Tessa Tesaka to record a somewhat flattering 3-1 score-line. On Sunday the girls had to face the top of the table Mountain team and came out on the wrong side of a 4-0 score-line with the visitors scoring a pair of goals in either half. However the team played with a lot of grit and determination and gave it their best effort for the entire game.

Girls U/18
The Surrey United U18 girls were full value for a 3-0 win over Mountain United. With a bunch of sickness and some injuries Surrey’s roster was stretched to the limit only but the girls played an intelligent ball possession retention game. The team got off to a quick start when Madison Makara scored in the 8th minute assisted by Carina Lauzon. Surrey added two more first half markers from Michelle Knowlan in the sixteenth minute assisted by Brittany Marcoux and a second goal for Carina Lauzon in the 35th minute this time assisted by Knowlan. The team was able to secure a clean sheet with a fine defensive play with a special mention going to midfielder Julia Lauzon who on this occasion slotted in admirably into the defence.

This week’s Surrey United BCSPL Player of the Week goes to Brendan Shaw of the U/15 BCSPL boys for his two goals and one assist in his team’s 3-1 victory. Honorable mention goes to the girls U/13 player Isabel Bratvold who scored both goals in her team’s 2-0 victory.

Weekly Round-Up February 25th & 26th

Surrey United Weekly Round-Up

February 25th & 26th

Boys U/13
The u13 boys started the season with a great performance against a tough Fusion team and although the game ended in a
0 – 0 tie there was still some great soccer played. Surrey’s back four moved the ball around well and attacked down the left flank with Suki Binning a constant threat moving forward at pace. The boys pressured the Fusion back line and were urged forward by Karn Kular who worked very hard throughout the game and won a series of corner kicks. Fusion, did occasionally look threatening on the counter-attack and were rewarded when they were given a rather soft penalty just before half-time. However, they failed to convert the kick and the scores remained level at the break..The second half was also a well contested affair and Surrey were unlucky not to grab the lead when a great Brendan Skinner cross was laid back to Kevin Ramirez who blazed high from 18 yards. As the game moved back and forth both sets of defences had the upper hand and neither side was able to break the deadlock.

Boys U/14
Surrey United opened the season away to Fusion on a windy Saturday morning in Vancouver. Surrey took control of the game early on and enjoyed large spells of position but was just missing that killer instinct in the final third of the field. However, their dominance was finally rewarded with a goal in the 27th minute when Erick Chmelyk’s corner-kick was flicked on by Joel Harrison for Ryan Donald to convert at the far post. United took that lead into the second half, but started the second frame slowly allowing Fusion to get back into the game. Fusion made the most of it and was then awarded a penalty kick which they smashed against the cross-bar. The close call gave Surrey the wake-up call they needed and they took back control of the game. In the 60th minute, Surrey a second goal when Riley Asserlind pounced on a fine through ball from Gavin Deacon and then rounded the advancing keeper before slotting the ball into the net. The goal proved to be critical because five minutes later Fusion pulled a goal back to make it a close finish but United held on for the 2-1 win.

Boys U/15
Surrey United U-15s struggled to build any kind of offence in some tough conditions on opening weekend. Although they were sound defensively and kept Fusion to just a couple of scoring chances United could not produce the finish to the several chances including a couple of golden opportunities. Final score was 0-0.

Boys U/16
The Surrey United U16’s were looking to carry-on where they left off from the mini season in the mini season rained very hard over the winter break and the results of that training proved positive. United controlled possession, dominating the early play, and deservedly took the lead when left back Matthew Bains let go a cracker of a shot to beat the Fusion keeper top corner. The second goal came from a very nice feed from the wing from Manveer Dhillon to Kyle Sohi who made no mistake and buried the ball behind the keeper. Fusion reduced the deficit just before the interval, when Surrey failed to clear a cross in the six yard box and then enjoyed their best spell of the fame in the early part of the second frame. However, a defensive error in their own penalty area cost them dearly in the 62nd minute when Nick Dobie picked up a loose ball and found the back of the net with a well placed shot. United rounded out the scoring four minutes later when Karn Phagura’s was on hand to tuck home a goal-keeper rebound.

Boys U/18
The U18 boys opened their season against a determined Fusion team. Surrey United was on the defensive for much of the first half and if not for the outstanding play of keeper Andrew Hicks the result would have been much different. Fusion scored the only goal of the game midway through the first half on a header. United responded well in the second half urged on by the strong leadership and effort shown by team captain Harpreet Samra. However, despite creating a multitude of chances Surrey was not able to get that final touch and the game ended in a 1-0 defeat.

Girls U/13
Surrey came out with purpose and determination right off the kick off. New additions, Taylor Nekic and Mackenzie Toop on the left flank were very busy in the opening minutes running at the opponents and causing Fusion all sorts of problems. In the 8th minute, United can count themselves unlucky not to take the lead when, another new signing, Kassie Kirlik saw her powerful shot strike the cross-bar. For the remainder of the first half Surrey United girls camped in Fusion’s half but the home team defended well to deny them any goals. However, Surrey deservedly broke the deadlock ten minutes into the second half when Toop took the ball from the right flank this time and managed to get inside of her full back who took her down in the penalty area. Kirlik stepped up and slotted the penalty kick home to the bottom right corner of the net. The rest of the game was played at a very frantic pace as Fusion began to push forward and play direct but United’s defence stood with goalkeeper Abigail Hunt looking very assured on a few long crosses to keep the shut out intact.

Girls U/14
Surrey United Selects 98 opened their BCSPL season in a very dominant and creative fashion generating many excellent scoring opportunities against Fusion FC and in fact played one of their best BCSPL games in but could not score on any of their multiple chances. Then, as fate would have it, Fusion capitalized very late in the game on a United defensive miscue and scored on one of their rare shots in the game. Sometimes, this game can be cruel but at the end of the day, if you do not score on your chances you are simply not going to win. United got fine performances from Alyssa Hunt, Tina Grsic, Kylee Walker, Lindsey Pegios and Liesanne Musico.

Girls U/15
Surrey United U15 Girls started their BCSPL Inaugural season off with a bang beating the Vancouver Fusion 3-0. The game started off at a fairly fast pace, with Surrey having a bit more of an edge on Fusion. Surrey opened the scoring in the 17th minute with a nice feed across the box from Jenna Baxter to Gurneet Dhaliwal who buried it for her first of the season. The second goal came in the 54th minute from Tanis Cuthbert who followed up nicely on her own shot to tap home the rebound. Surrey then sealed the win in the 76th min when a nice cross from Gurneet Dhaliwal found Monpreet Heer who hammered a powerful shot into the net.

Girls U/16
The Surrey United U16 girls got off to a good start to their game but were unable to break free for any substantial efforts on goal. In the 24th minute, somewhat against the run of play, a long ball from the Fusion midfield resulted in some confusion at the top of the United box and their striker capitalized by lashing a shot into the net. The first half continued as an intriguiging match-up with United’s ball possession being pitted against Fusion’s long ball counter attacks. In the 33rd minute Fusion increased their lead when a run down the right flank resulted in a nice cross which was well finished by Vancouver to give them a 2-0 lead. Just at the end of the first half United goalkeeper Amy McKay received a Red Card for bringing down an opponent and denting a goal-scoring opportunity. The second half started with some inspired play by the short-handed United squad and their fine play and fighting spirit was rewarded with a goal in the 63rd minute. A superb long throw by Taylor Williamson into the box was finished nicely by Chelsea Harkins. Surrey United continued to press resulting in some narrow misses along with some fine saves by the Vancouver net-minder to keep the score at 2-1. However, with United pressing hard for the equalizer Vancouver netted their third marker of the game three minutes into injury time.

Girls U/18
The U18 girls returned to BCSPL action with a 2 – 1 victory over Fusion FC at Vancouver’s Trillium Park. United girls were controlling play in the first half but a quick counter attack by the home side resulted in a goal and gave them a 1-0 lead at the half. In the second half, Surrey played with a more determined sense of urgency and was rewarded with the tying goal midway through the half with Danica Kump scoring and Carina Lauzon assisting. United kept up the pressure on the home side and in the 88th minute were rewarded when Carina Lauzon scored thanks to an assist from sister Julia Lauzon. The win was well deserved and provided a great platform to kick off the new season.

This week’s Surrey United BCSPL Player of the Week goes to Kassie Kirlik of the U/13 BCSPL girls team who scored the goal and played a prominent role in the game.

Boys U/13
The U13 boys continued their great season with a convincing 4-0 win over local rivals South Fraser. The visitors started well but could not break down the solid back four for United who were outstanding all day. Then in the 19th minute after some tricky wing play from Suki Binning he provided a great cross for Brandon Canuel to tap home the opening goal of the game from close range. The second half started the way the first half ended with Surrey attacking with pace and creating lots of chances. A great break down the right flank involving Jacob Baxter ended with the speedy Evan Chow slotting home Baxter’s precise cross to go up 2-0. Karn Kular has had some impressive goals this season and once again obliged with another wonder goal with a delightful chip from 25 yards. The boys finished off an excellent display with a late goal in the 65th minute from the impressive Harman Samra.

Boys U/14
On a cold Saturday morning Surrey United and South Fraser played a game of two opposite halves. United had trouble dealing with South Frasers direct play in the first half and found themselves down 2-0 at the half. Surrey to their credit came out in the second half with a point to prove and got hold of the ball and started pushing forward and creating a number of good opportunities. However, they just could not get the final touch on net to turn their dominating play into goals. With their high pressure game United took away the threat of South Fraser’s direct play and continued to press. They were eventually rewarded when they were awarded a penalty kick after substitute Nolan McMurchy was taken down in the box, Felipe Vieira stepped up and slotted the ball home calmly bring the score back to 2-1. Surrey United continued to press for the remainder of the game but was unable to pull another goal back and ended up on the wrong side of the 2-1 score line.

Boys U/15
The U-15 Boys saw a similar performance to previous weeks in earning another result and remaining undefeated on the season. United was dominant in possession of the ball but were not able to create or finish enough scoring opportunities to put South Fraser away. United got the lead on a free kick that was initially blocked but Darren Rulofs picked up the rebound and swung a great cross into the area where Cole Basarich headed it home to take the 1-0 lead. Late in the second half, Marcus Thavonesouk found a bit of space near the top of the box to swivel and strike a good shot low to the corner for the insurance marker.

Boys U/16
The Surrey United U16 boys had a chance to clinch first place a win versus South Fraser and did not disappoint cruising to a 4-0 victory. The game as usual started slower than the coach would have liked and South Fraser was able to manage several shots on net which were well handled by goalkeeper Lucas Johnston. United gradually started to move the ball better and opened the scoring in the 10th minute when fine work by Bavi Dhaliwal and Connor Hildebrant carved out an opportunity for Kyle Sohi to beat the opposing keeper with a strong left foot shot. Two minutes later, more Surrey United pressure in the visitor’s penalty area was met with a hand ball from a South Fraser defender. Matthew Bains took the resulting penalty kick and calmly placed it past the keeper. The second half began with two substitutions but the team still did not appear to be showing any urgency and soft touches along with poor decisions resulted in several turnovers. Surrey United gradually picked up their pace and started to create more pressure and several great scoring opportunities. This pressure paid off and produced a goal in the 69th minute by Dilpreet Brar. Like the first half, great effort from our midfielders Karn Phagura and Obraj Khela created space and an opportunity for Amritpal Jagdeo to complete the scoring in the 72nd minute.

Boys U/18
The U18 boys faced a stubborn South Fraser squad on Saturday afternoon. Despite dominating the play in the first half the team was unable to finish on several scoring chances and late in the half South Fraser capitalized on a defensive error and scored on their first shot of the game. Surrey United regrouped at the half and got a quick goal from Dalton San early in the second frame to start the comeback. The team continued to press and late in the half some timely substitutions with fresh legs paid dividends and United score two more goals from substitutes Connor Prentice and Joshua Prasad. Jeff Kavanagh set the tone in the first half with several outstanding overlapping runs, combining with Sho MacDonald on a number of occasions to test the South Fraser keeper.

Girls U/13
The Surrey United U/13 Girls team was hoping to end their mini season home stand with a victory. However, that goal was thwarted by the visiting first place South Fraser team. Although the score line was 2-0 in the end, the game had an exciting ebb and flow to it. South Fraser had a few half chances from the flanks, but the United girls kept a good portion of the possession and played some of their best football of the season. However, they were beaten on a pair of goals, one in each half, by South Fraser’s Maggie Laroque.

Girls U/14
Surrey United Selects 98 extended their undefeated record with a 1-0 win against undefeated South Fraser today in girl’s U-14 BCPL action. The game was very evenly matched with some fantastic battles in all areas of the field. Surrey United’s defensive positioning was sound and eliminated any scoring threats from South Fraser. South Fraser also played very well defensively. However, early into the second half, Surrey United’s Kristina Grsic made an excellent run down the right flank after some good combination play and crossed a ball into the hands of the South Fraser keeper who mishandled the ball into the back of the net. Surrey United valiantly defended their 1-0 lead and denied any scoring opportunities to secure their undefeated record. Surrey United has yet to concede a goal in league play this season. Special mention must be made to U-13 goalie Abby Hunt who filled in for regular keeper Alyssa Smith who was resting due to injury.

Girls U/15
The Surrey United BCSPL U15 Girls spoiled their unbeaten record losing 3-2 to South Fraser in a game where they only have themselves to blame. The girls did not seem to be ready for the game and were two goals down inside ten minutes due to some direct play on their own part and some sloppy defensive work from United. Surrey then surrendered a killer goal two minutes before the interval to go in 3-0 down at the half. United, obviously with their pride hurt, rallied in the second half and pulled a goal back in the 48th minute with a fierce shot from Meghan Wingrove. The goal sparked the United girls into further action as they poured forward in search of goals and they further reduced the deficit in the 65th minute through Monpreet Heer which set the stage for an exciting final 15minutes.However, despite lots of pressure and some frantic defending Surrey just could not find the tying goal. If Surrey had only played the whole game the way they played the second half they would have for sure earned a more favourable result.

Girls U/16
Another great fall day at Cloverdale Athletic Park was the setting for our game against district rivals South Fraser. The game started off well with our girls coming out quite aggressively with all balls being contested by our girls, every inch of field was going to be earned by our opponents today! Some good attacking through the midfield finally resulted in a great goal for United at the 22nd minute by Meagan Leite. Taylor Williamson stepped up well to challenge a high ball and nodded it to Gabrielle Graham who switched the field to a streaking Leite who hammered a powerful right foot shot into the roof of the net. Ten minutes later United increased their lead when they were awarded a free-kick at the top of the penalty area. A great strike from Chelsea Harkins deflected off the wall into the top right corner. In the second half, South Fraser came out with some good determination and the game moved back and forth for a while with each team having its share of possession. Finally, following some confusion from Surrey United on a free kick one of the South Fraser forwards broke through to score a goal in the 50th minute. However, Surrey United responded well to the setback and came back strong with great determination. They were rewarded for their hard work and self-belief when the impressive Taylor Williamson sealed the victory for our girls with a looping shot from the top of the penalty area. Final score Surrey United 3 South Fraser 1.

Boys U/13
The U/13 Boys were looking to keep their recent good form going against a strong Vancouver Island team. Surrey started strongly applying constant pressure on the Island defence and was rewarded in the 13th minute when a well worked short corner resulted in a great header from in-form striker Karn Kular. United passed the ball well and utilized their pace on the wings to great effect and added a second goal fifteen minutes later when once again Brendan Skinner hit one of his patented free kicks which gave the goalkeeper no chance and added to the skippers impressive scoring record. Surrey increased their lead with a great poacher’s goal from Sinan Zukanovich two minutes before the break to end the half with an impressive 3-0 lead. The visitors rallied in the second half and scored two great free kicks of their own to bring the game to 3-2 and continued to press. A late tackle by defender Manipal Lidher gave the visitors a penalty in the last minute of play and a chance to salvage a point but they were denied when a great save by United goalkeeper Dawson Smith preserved the win.

Boys U/14
United started the game strongly and created a few good scoring opportunities but were unable to capitalize and found themselves trailing against the run of play at the 5th minute mark. Surrey continued to control the game and five minutes later pulled level when Wyatt Gilbert hit a terrific strike from 25 yards that flew into the top of the net. United continued to take the game to the visitors and some brilliant runs down the left hand side by Felipe Vierra caused the visitors considerable discomfort. It was fitting that one of these runs finally paid dividends in the 28th minute when Vierra went by three defenders and pulled the ball back for Damon Schmidt to slot home from the top of the box. This proved to be the game winner, because although United continued to dominate through the second half they were unable to add to their tally.

Boys U/15
The U-15 Boys continued their winning ways with another strong performance against Vancouver Island Wave that saw them register a convincing 4-1 victory. United was able to work the ball in behind the Waves back line and created numerous scoring chances. Jeevin Kang found a way to finish a trio of these chances to register a first half hat-trick. Vancouver Island added a goal of their own just before the interval to make the score 3-1 at the half. United, for a fifth straight game, drew a much deserved penalty kick early in the second half when Brendan Shaw was brought down in the area. Shaw took the kick himself and after his initial effort was saved he had the presence of mind to follow up and hammer the rebound into the net. The win keeps United’s unbeaten streak in tack and leaves then comfortably atop the division.

Boys U/16
The Surrey United U16 boys are consistent! They consistently start the game at a slower pace than their opponents but also have consistently won and today was no exception. The Wave came out hard and pressured United from the outset forcing goalkeeper Robert Goodey, to come big early to fend off the Wave. Surrey finally started to feel their stride, playing some eye-catching and took the lead in the 10th minute when Amritpal Jagdeo beat two defenders before beating the Wave goalkeeper with a nicely controlled shot. Surrey was rewarded in the 19th minute with a second goal for Amritpal Jagdeo on a nice feed from Kyle Sohi. United’s Rojan Bozorgzadeh scored one minute later from the 25 yard area and Amritpal repaid Kyle Sohi with a nice feed before Sohi buried his shot from the top of the box. Shortly, before the interval Bozorgzadeh was brought down in the area and buried the penalty shot to give high flying United a 5-0 lead at the break. United continued to dominate and added another in the 69th minute when the hard-working Joel Waterman made a nice centering pass to Josh Tylor who hammered a powerful shot into the net from the 25 yards. Three minutes later Tylor added his second goal after cashing in on a goalkeeping error. Bavi Dhaliwal and Sohi both added further goals to round out the scoring with an impressive 9-0 victory that keeps them firmly in first place.

Boys U/17
Surrey United played a tight first half giving CMF no time or space through the first forty four minutes, unfortunately CMF capitalized on a free kick in the forty-fifth minute to take a 1-0 lead. The second half was a much different story with CMF adding a second goal within five minutes to increase their lead. Surrey had a number of good chances to score but failed to capitalize on those opportunities with some poor finishing. Great ball movement by CMF combined with a couple of Surrey defensive breakdowns lead to two more goals before Connor Hildebrant’s tenacious work ethic in the box forced a CMF defender to take him down. Hildebrant scored on the resulting penalty kick to bring the score to 4-1 but a Surrey give-away in midfield lead to the final CMF goal in the eighty-seventh minute to cap off a CMF 5-1 victory.

Boys U/18
The U18 Boys played an evenly matched squad from Vancouver Island. After the first 30 minutes Surrey United controlled most of the play but unfortunately was unable to capitalize on several scoring chances. The most notable was a shot by Dalton San that hit the left post but failed to find its way into the net. In the second half ,Connor Prentice (U18 Metro) joined the attack but both defences dominated the respective attackers which contributed to a scoreless tie with Simon Cohen registering the shut-out for United.

Girls U/13
On another beautiful Sunday morning the Surrey United U13 girls failed to get their second win of the season losing 3-0 to the visiting Vancouver Island Wave who picked up their 2nd win in successive days. The Wave took full advantage of a lethargic looking Surrey team who conceded a goal inside the first 10 minutes on a shot from top of the edge of the 18 yard box. The goal produced a good response from the United girls who for the next thirty five minutes saw them play their best soccer of the inaugural mini season. They managed to create four great scoring opportunities which were saved and pushed away by the Waves goalkeeper who was easily the player of the game. With United still pressing the Wave took advantage of a Surrey defensive slip midway through the second half and grabbed their second goal of the game against the run of play. The visitors completed the scoring with a late goal to register a 3-0 victory.

Girls U/14
Surrey United U-14 girls defeated Vancouver Island 2-0 in EA BCSPL action at Cloverdale Athletic Park. Alyssa Hunt used her speed to good effect and had a fine game scoring twice for Surrey in the first half. The second half turned out to be a very physical affair and although Surrey sustained good pressure they could not finish their chances but the win preserves their 100% winning record and keeps them in first place.

Girls U/15
Surrey United BCSPL U15 Girls captured their 4th straight victory with a 3-0 shut-out against the Vancouver Island Wave. Jenna Baxter set the team on its way when she opened the scoring in the 7th minute with a rocket from 25 yards out. While United dominated territorially and enjoyed sustained periods of pressure they were unable to convert that dominance into goals. Midway through the second half, United grabbed the insurance marker when Monpreet Heer scored on a cross from Gurneet Dhaliwal. Three minutes later the same players combined once again with Heer again providing the finish.
