Surrey United Weekly Round-Up
February 27th & 28th
U14G vs. TOFC at CAP
The U14 Girls dominated this past Sunday against TOFC. The wind made it difficult for both teams, but Surrey stuck to the game plan and dominated possession throughout the first half and lead 2-0 at halftime: goals from Mickey Tupper and Sarah Fewings.
Although Surrey had multiple chances in the second half and maintained the majority of possession, they could not find the back of the net. They let their guard down late in the second half, allowing TOFC to make it a one goal game. Surrey held on to win 2-1.
U15G vs. TOFC at CAP
This week the Surrey United U15 girls faced Thompson Okanagan in what was TOFC’s first game of the season. Surrey started strong and controlled the game, passing and maintaining possession well to open up the TOFC defense. With a strong wind Surrey looked to take advantage and test the TOFC goalie as Sophia Stevens had two shots saved well and the half finished 0-0.
At the start of the second half Surrey continued their dominance with TOFC struggling to get a foothold in the game. Surrey continued to dominate possession but were unable to find the net. With time winding down Surrey earned a free kick 35 yards away from the TOFC goal, against a very strong wind, and Sophia Stevens unleashed a rocket of a shot which sailed past the keeper to give Surrey the lead with 5 minutes left. Surrey continued to defend strong and earned the win heading into a big game next week vs Mountain United.
U18G-98/99 vs. TOFC at CAP
Following a slow start to the season, the 98/99 girls opened strong, with a goal in the first five minutes. Raveena Biln opened the scoring with her first in the 2nd minute of the game followed by her second at 23rd minute of the game. Great possession could have led to more goals, but our passes were not connecting. It was 2-0 for Surrey going into the break.
In the second half, Sally Bachmann scored in the 68th minute to make it 3-0 for Surrey United. Some great plays by the team created two breakaways by Sarah Parker, which she was unable to convert. Good to build on for next game.
U18G – 98 vs TOFC at CAP Feb 27, 2016
In the first game of weekend double-header, SU 98 Girls battled to a 2-2 draw against a hard-working TO White team. SU 98 started the game flat and conceded a goal 12 minutes into the game when TO White scored from a free kick. SU battled back and dominated play and were awarded a penalty shot. SU missed the penalty and the score remained 1-0 for the first half. Finally, SU tied the game in the 60th minute from hard work by Violet Bacon who slotted one in close. However, TO took the lead again after the ensuing kick-off from a long range pass down the flank converted from a crossed ball. SU battled back and a very determined Liesanne Musico salvaged a draw with a goal with two minutes left in the game. SU then scored another goal with one minute left but was controversially called back off-side and the game remained a draw.
U18G – 98 vs CMF at Town Centre Feb 28, 2016
In the second game of the weekend, SU 98 girls defeated CMF 1-0 at Town Center. Violet Bacon continued her scoring prowess and put SU up 1-0 eight minutes into the game. This time, SU sustained the lead and played a disciplined game for the remainder to keep it at 1-0. A good weekend of development for the SU 98’s who experienced an array of events that the sport of soccer can evoke.
U15B vs. TOFC at CAP
After a rain-out last weekend, Saturday, February 27 came around and it was time for Surrey United’s long awaited season opener against the league’s interior team, TOFC. The game started with some early action as a poor turnover in the 18 yard box resulted in a goal for the visitors. It wasn’t long before the conflict started as TOFC was given a red card and Surrey was awarded a PK which unfortunately was shut down by the strong Okanagan goaltender twice. The game would press on with more chances from Surrey and more outstanding goaltending from TOFC. Finally, some great link up play from all three strikers allowed United to break through in the final stages of the game as Jacob Sol slotted the ball into the bottom corner of the net to tie the game at 1-1.
U18B vs. TOFC at CAP
Surrey United U18 Boys faced TOFC U18 boys at Cloverdale Athletic Park. Surrey dominated possession early and controlled the play. Several good scoring chances did not result in any goals in the first half. Jassi Mann opened the scoring at the 47’ when he finished his opportunity after a nice pass through the middle from Zach Verhoven. It was 1-0 Surrey until TOFC evened it up at the 58’ with a rocket to the back of the net after a rebound from a corner kick.
However, Surrey continued to dominate possession and it seemed inevitable that they would regain the lead. Zach Verhoven slotted the go-ahead goal at the 70’ after Nikhil Reddy set him up for a fine finish. The final whistle blew with a 2-1 victory for the home team.
